Background of the Study
Digital rhetoric, which encompasses the art of persuasive communication in online environments, has taken on new forms in Nigeria’s vibrant digital space. Platforms like Twitter and YouTube host extensive user interactions where language is strategically used to influence opinions and incite social change. This study investigates the characteristics of digital rhetoric in Nigerian social media by comparing Twitter posts and YouTube comments. Twitter, with its succinct format, often necessitates sharp, impactful rhetoric, while YouTube comments allow for more extended discourse and argumentation (Eze, 2023). The study explores how these platforms foster different rhetorical strategies and linguistic choices, reflecting variations in audience engagement, cultural expression, and identity construction. By analyzing the content and stylistic features of digital rhetoric, the research provides insights into how persuasive language evolves in the digital realm. The study also considers the socio-political contexts that shape rhetorical practices in Nigeria, highlighting the role of digital media in facilitating public debates and mobilizing communities. Overall, this research aims to document the innovative forms of digital rhetoric and assess their implications for both communication theory and practical discourse analysis in Nigerian social media (Udo, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although digital rhetoric plays a critical role in shaping public discourse, there is limited comparative research on how platforms like Twitter and YouTube foster distinct rhetorical styles in Nigeria. The absence of such analysis hampers our understanding of the persuasive strategies that underpin digital communication and their broader social impact. This study addresses the gap by examining the differences and similarities in digital rhetoric across these two platforms, providing insights into how rhetoric evolves in diverse online contexts (Ijeoma, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  • To compare digital rhetorical strategies on Nigerian Twitter and YouTube.

  • To analyze the linguistic and stylistic features of digital rhetoric in both platforms.

  • To evaluate the socio-political impact of digital rhetoric on public discourse.

Research Questions

  • What are the key differences in digital rhetoric between Twitter and YouTube in Nigeria?

  • How do linguistic and stylistic features vary across these platforms?

  • What is the socio-political impact of digital rhetoric in Nigerian online communities?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative insight into digital rhetoric in Nigerian social media. By analyzing Twitter and YouTube comments, the research enhances understanding of persuasive online communication, contributing valuable perspectives for communication scholars, digital strategists, and policymakers interested in the role of rhetoric in shaping public opinion (Bello, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to evaluating digital rhetoric in Nigerian social media on Twitter and YouTube. It does not extend to other platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of Terms

  • Digital Rhetoric: The use of persuasive language in digital environments to influence audiences.
